Watkins Possesses the Advantage - Yet Calvert-Lewin Might Still Secure the World Cup

Just one goal in his initial ten top-flight appearances this season had many questioning whether Dominic Calvert-Lewin's peak were in the past.

But, a just four weeks on, he is the hottest attacker in England after scoring seven goals in six straight games.

His newest finish, in a 1-1 draw versus Sunderland, elevated his season's haul to eight, establishing him as the leading English scorer in the Premier League this term.

An Impressive Resurgence

The 28-year-old joined Leeds United on a Bosman move in the summer, following a nine-year period with Everton that was blighted by fitness issues in its closing stages.

But, the statistics supporting his comeback in Daniel Farke's new fast-breaking 3-5-2 formation are extremely notable.

His six-game scoring streak sees him in elite company as only the 11th English player to score in six or more consecutive Premier League outings.

To put that into perspective, even England captain Harry Kane never managed a run lasting this many games - his best stands at two distinct five-match streaks.

And the sole English striker to surpass Calvert-Lewin in recent years is Jamie Vardy, who went on an eight-game scoring spree for Leicester City in 2019.

The Reason for the Hot Streak?

What has made Calvert-Lewin so difficult to stop in recent weeks? A recent opponent's manager summed it up aptly.

"He has the ideal timing," the manager remarked. "He's intelligent and a really good striker and he found the timing to arrive at the perfect moment."

That nose for goal and timing inside the penalty area was what made him a popular figure at his former team.

Pundits note the system adjustment to a 3-5-2 as a key factor, helping more players to enter the box and occupy defenders, which has created the striker some extra space.

"He is a traditional centre-forward," observed a former professional. "For the goal... it was a neat little finish beyond the keeper, a typical centre-forward's goal."

"I've endured a lot since then. Lots of highs and lots of downs. A test of mentality and I've persevered and kept going... I've had faith and here I am now."

His manager has expressed little astonishment at this hot streak, emphasizing that the player is "one of the best strikers" in the league.

The former Sheffield United player has eleven England caps, scoring four goals, but has not represented the country since the most recent European Championship.

"I think it might depend on whether he takes two or three centre-forwards," an expert added. "If it is three, he certainly has a chance."
