Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study suggests that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
