No Fewer Than 6 Lose Their Lives in Crowd Crush at Ghanaian Military Recruitment Event
At least 6 individuals have died amid a stampede at a military recruitment event held in a stadium in Ghana.
The Wednesday's "tragic" event appeared to have been caused by "an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the gates," announced a statement from Ghana's armed forces.
22 others were injured, among them 5 who remain in serious state.
Thousands had gathered at the El-Wak sports venue, in the capital, the capital, with the aspiration of joining the armed forces.
Ghana has a rate of joblessness among young people of approximately thirty-two percent, the latest government statistics indicate, and such recruitment events normally draw massive gatherings and frequently result in chaotic scenes.
The closing date to apply for this recruitment was prolonged for a seven days to accommodate more applicants, as a number had experienced difficulties in the process.
Army spokesperson Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin said the crush took place before the event's scheduled start of 06:20 GMT.
The nation's leader John Mahama has gone to see the injured in hospital.
Calm has been reestablished, and the recruitment exercise has since begun.
